    Hi Patrick

I hope you and your loved ones are happy and healthy during this challenging time.

I’m Luis Valenzuela, Director of Education at Florida Grand Opera.

This year 2021, there is a great opportunity to engage with the LGBTQ community. As part of the FGO programs, we have a few Community Conversations inspired by Fellow Travelers by composer Gregory Spears. The opera is set during the McCarthy era of the 1950s and focuses on the “lavender scare”, a witch hunt and mass firings of gay people from the United States government. The story centers on the love affair between two men working for the federal government—Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller, a State Department official, and Timothy Laughlin, a recent college graduate working in a senator’s office.

The possibilities for different programs are endless! This is a rough outline of what we were thinking. We are looking for members of different Broward organizations supporting the LGBTQ community, to be part of the panels during our Community Conversations, scheduled for next year at the Center for Spiritual Living in Oakland Park. The idea is to engage with leaders and the community to express their opinion and experiences on different topics related to our LGBTQ world inspired by the unique operatic art form.

Topics for our Community Conversations 2021 series:
    • The Coming Out Experience
How our society has progressed through the affects and effects of McCarthyism?
    • The “Gay” American Dream
Wanting the “American Dream” in a society that does not allow any legal rights to homosexuals, we will discuss the evolution of same sex marriage rights, adoption, equal opportunity employment, and more.

I will like to schedule a phone call for more details. Please let me know the best way to contact you and when.

Hope to hear form you soon
